The Legislative Chamber of the Parliament of Uzbekistan ratified the draft laws “On the ratification of the Treaty between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan on certain sections of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz State Border” and “On the ratification of the Agreement between the Government of Uzbekistan and the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan on the joint management of water resources of the Andijan (Kempirabad) reservoir”.
These bills were first discussed in detail at meetings of all political parties of factions in parliament and were later put to the vote of the parliament, the press service of the Uzbek parliament reported.
When presenting the documents to the deputies, it was emphasized that the bills provide for the completion of the delimitation of the border line with a total length of 302.29 km, including 35 sections of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz State border. The ratification of the “Treaty between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic on certain sections of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz State border” is also being considered.
The adoption of these documents will serve to further develop mutually beneficial cooperation between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, to find a comprehensive solution on the issues of determining the Uzbek-Kyrgyz State border, the deputies emphasized.
On October 10, the head of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan, Kamchybek Tashiev, stated that in total more than 19,000 hectares of land remain for Kyrgyzstan, and 4,485 hectares for Uzbekistan - the water area of the Kempir-Abad reservoir, but two countries will jointly manage it.
The Kempir-Abad reservoir (in Uzbekistan it is called Andijan) is located at the junction of the Osh and Jalal-Abad regions of Kyrgyzstan and the Andijan region of Uzbekistan. It was built in 1983 on the territory of Kyrgyzstan. However, public activists of Kyrgyzstan opposed such an agreement and a number of their members were detained and are still in custody.
