The Government of Uzbekistan and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have signed an agreement to allocate 500 million dollars for the implementation of the Program for Transition to a Green and Sustainable Market Economy, Sputnik-Uzbekistan reports.

According to the AIIB, the funds will support comprehensive reforms aimed at improving the environmental sustainability and market efficiency of the country’s development model. The financing is being provided under the bank’s Climate Policy-Based Financing (CPBF).

The program includes several key measures:

  • improving efficiency and transparency in the management of the energy sector and state-owned enterprises;
  • introducing climate-oriented standards into the public procurement system;
  • establishing clear and transparent rules for carbon credit trading based on a reliable monitoring, reporting and verification system to attract private capital.

“The program reflects the AIIB’s commitment to supporting reforms that can deliver sustainable climate and economic outcomes. It creates conditions for expanding climate finance and increasing the role of the private sector. We look forward to continued close cooperation with the Government of Uzbekistan on its green transition,” said AIIB Investment Director Konstantin Limitovsky.

The project is being implemented jointly with the World Bank and aligns with Uzbekistan’s Green Economy Transition Strategy for 2019–2030, as well as the goals of the Uzbekistan-2030 Strategy, which envision the development of clean energy and improved resource efficiency.
