On December 4, 2024, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as reported by the Press Service of the President of Uzbekistan.
The IAEA delegation arrived in Uzbekistan to participate in the International Conference on the Use of Nuclear Energy, co-organized in Samarkand with leading foreign experts in the field.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the prospects for "radical expansion of bilateral cooperation" and the promotion of new areas of collaboration.
Uzbekistan has been a member of the IAEA since 1994. Over this period, more than 40 joint projects have been implemented with the technical assistance of this respected organization. Currently, five projects are underway to improve the legal framework and the capacity of national structures, as well as to advance nuclear science, medicine, and other fields.
Priority areas for cooperation include enhancing the competence and capacity of national agencies, training highly qualified personnel, and exploring prospective projects in nuclear energy, agriculture, water management, healthcare, and environmental protection within the framework of IAEA programs.
At the conclusion of the meeting, an agreement was reached to adopt a joint "road map" for expanding multifaceted cooperation in the peaceful development of nuclear energy.
