Uzbekistan and South Korea have begun construction of a multispecialty medical center for adults in Tashkent, the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan announced, reports Gazeta.uz.

The project is implemented with support from Korea Eximbank and the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF). The contract was signed between Health Minister Asilbek Khudayarov and the Kyeryong consortium, selected as the general contractor. The signing ceremony included representatives from South Korea, marking the official start of construction.

The total project cost is $149.8 million, including $124 million financed through an EDCF loan via Korea Eximbank and $25.8 million contributed by Uzbekistan. The hospital will be a Level IV facility with 300 beds, built to international standards, creating over 700 new jobs.

As part of the project, 130 Uzbek medical professionals will undergo advanced training in South Korea, and 32 highly qualified Korean specialists will join the staff in Uzbekistan.

Once operational, the center will perform up to 8,500 high-tech procedures annually in cardiology, transplant surgery, neurosurgery, rehabilitation, and spine and joint treatments.

Previously, in 2020, EDCF supported the construction of the National Pediatric Medical Center, described as “unique in Central Asia for its capabilities and specialization.”
