Industrial production of rhenium - a rare and expensive metal used in aviation, petrochemistry, and electronics - has been launched in Uzbekistan, the press service of the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex (AMMC) reports.

A specialized facility equipped with modern German equipment was established at the Uzbek Technological Metals Plant for industrial-scale production. The technology for obtaining rhenium with 99.9% purity was developed by the plant's specialists in 2021.

The raw materials for production are waste from the copper smelting plant and other industrial enterprises in the country. According to AMMC’s plans, the annual output will reach 3 tons.

Rhenium is noted as one of the densest and most heat-resistant metals. It is used in strategically important sectors, including aircraft engines, oil refining catalysts, and high-tech electronics.

Global demand for rhenium remains consistently high - with the price of 1 kilogram reaching $2,000. The launch of production in Uzbekistan will strengthen the country’s position in the international rare metals market.
