Uzbekistan considers construction and lease of terminals in Georgian ports

A Memorandum of Understanding in the field of transportation was signed between the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, according to Trend news agency.

This document was signed during the official visit of the Uzbekistan delegation to Tbilisi, led by Prime Minister Abdullah Aripov.

The Memorandum envisages the construction and long-term lease of maritime terminals and warehouses at Georgian seaports, cooperation in civil aviation, development of road transportation, joint research, and the application of innovations in the transportation and infrastructure sector.

According to the information from the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan, in 2022, the volume of export-import transportation through the Georgian ports of Poti and Batumi reached 864,000 tons, which is a 72% increase compared to the 2021 figure (503,000 tons).

The Uzbekistan delegation visiting Georgia included the Minister of Transport, Ilhom Mahkamov, the Minister of Construction and Housing and Utilities, Batyr Zakirov, as well as the leaders of various enterprises and companies such as "Uzeltexsanoat," "Uzkimesanoat," Eriell Group, Ferkensco, Air Samarkand airline, and others.

As part of the Memorandum, the application of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP+) for products from Uzbekistan, the USA, Canada, and Japan is also envisaged. This provides preferential tariffs for exported goods. Companies operating in the free industrial zone near the Georgian port of Poti will also be able to collaborate without customs duties.
