Uzbekistan ranks first among the trading partners of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) among CIS countries, Sergey Glazyev, the Minister for Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) said. He made this statement during a meeting of the joint working group between the EEC and the government of Uzbekistan in Samarkand, Podrobno.uz reports.
"The close cooperation between the EEC and Uzbekistan is leading to practical results associated with the growth of trade and economic cooperation volumes. This was the goal we pursued when we started our work," noted Sergey Glazyev, emphasizing that since the formation of the EAEU, trade turnover with Uzbekistan has tripled, and this country accounts for nearly half of the total foreign trade volume of the EAEU with CIS countries.
According to the EEC, in 2021 alone, trade turnover between the EAEU and Uzbekistan increased by almost a third compared to the previous year, reaching $11.2 billion. This includes a 17.9% increase in exports (to $8.2 billion) and a 39.1% increase in imports (to $3.1 billion).
Uzbekistan obtained observer status with the EAEU in December 2020. On April 30, 2021, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the EEC and the government of Uzbekistan, and a plan of joint activities of the Commission and the government of Uzbekistan for 2021-2023 was approved. In accordance with the Memorandum, a joint working group was established.
