A roadmap for the construction of the Kambarata HPP-1 in Kyrgyzstan has been approved, UzA reports.

The ministers of energy of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan signed a road map in Bishkek on January 6 for the construction of the Kambarata HPP-1.

By the document, the parties determined the main conditions and necessary measures for the implementation of the project. It was noted that this hydroelectric power plant plays an important role in the electricity and water supply of the countries of Central Asia.

As part of the project, a reservoir with a capacity of 5.4 billion cubic meters and a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 1,860 MW will be put into operation. The potential new HPP will produce an average of 5.6 billion kWh of electricity per year.

Kyrgyzstan has a hydropower potential of about 140 billion MW, of which it uses about 12%. The most powerful HPP in Kyrgyzstan was built on the Naryn River with a capacity of 1200 MW in 1974. The Kambarata HPP-1 is also planned to be built on the Naryn River upstream of the Toktogul HPP.

Kambarata HPP-2 on the Naryn River near the village Kara-Zhigach of the Toktogul district of the Jalal-Abad region was started back in Soviet times, but was frozen in 1993. Resumption of construction began in 2009. A feature of the station is a unique explosive dam. In 2010, the first hydroelectric unit with a capacity of 120 MW was put into operation, the second hydroelectric unit is planned to be launched in 2025, the launch date of the third hydroelectric unit has not been determined.

According to experts, the construction of the Kambarata HPP-1 and HPP-2 will ensure the filling of the reservoir of the Toktogul HPP, which generates the bulk of electricity consumed by Kyrgyzstan. It will also allow the downstream countries of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to receive irrigation water during the growing season without delay.
