Uzbekistan’s Russian Gas Imports Set to Exceed 10 Billion Cubic Meters in 2026

Russian pipeline gas supplies to Uzbekistan in 2026 could increase by more than 40%, from 7 billion to over 10 billion cubic meters, according to a global gas market review by the International Energy Agency (IEA), Gazeta.uz reports.

Russia continues to increase gas exports to Uzbekistan via Kazakhstan and the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline system. The increase in imports is due to a decline in domestic production: from January to May 2026, natural gas production in Uzbekistan fell by 14%, or 2.6 billion cubic meters. The country's authorities are compensating for the deficit with supplies from abroad to meet domestic demand.

Analytical Commentary

Uzbekistan's gas industry is facing a serious challenge: the country, which possesses significant natural gas reserves, is gradually transforming from an exporter to an importer. The main reason is declining production at mature fields, where the ability to maintain previous production volumes is limited by natural depletion. At the same time, domestic demand is growing, driven by the development of industry, energy, and increased consumer consumption.

Gas imports from Russia allow Uzbekistan to stabilize the domestic market, avoid fuel shortages, and ensure reliable energy supplies during periods of increased demand. Furthermore, Russian supplies utilize the existing Central Asia-Central Asia gas pipeline infrastructure, making this route cost-effective.

In the long term, Uzbekistan will need to accelerate the modernization of its gas industry, attract investment in geological exploration, develop alternative energy, and improve energy efficiency. Continued dependence on imports could put pressure on the country's energy security, but cooperation with Russia will temporarily offset the decline in domestic production and maintain domestic market stability.
