Afghanistan and Turkmenistan Discuss Expanding Sports Cooperation

The head of Afghanistan’s National Olympic Committee, Physical Culture and Sports, Maulvi Ahmadullah Wasik, met with Turkmenistan’s Ambassador to Kabul, Hodzha Ovezov, to discuss prospects for expanding bilateral cooperation in the field of sports, Pajhwok reports.

Wasik emphasized that Turkmenistan and Afghanistan are “close neighbors and long-standing friends” and called for strengthening ties across all areas, especially in sports. He noted that “sport can serve as a bridge of communication between peoples” and proposed organizing joint competitions to improve athletes’ skills and foster friendly relations between the two countries.

In response, Ovezov expressed condolences over the recent earthquake in eastern Afghanistan and reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s readiness to provide necessary assistance. He added that “sport knows no borders” and expressed hope for further development of sports collaboration.

The meeting highlighted both countries’ mutual interest in promoting sports diplomacy, which not only supports athletes’ health and achievements but also strengthens neighborly relations.

According to Afghan media, Afghan athletes have won 100 medals this year in various international competitions, including gold and silver at the July Asian Wushu Championship in Shanghai, China.
