Food Aid is Lifeline for Millions in Afghanistan

The World Food Programme says food aid is the only lifeline for many Afghans facing hunger in remote, hard-hit areas, Khaama.com reports.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has emphasized that for many Afghans facing acute hunger, food assistance remains their only lifeline. In a statement released on Tuesday, June 10, via X, the agency highlighted the urgent need for sustained aid deliveries to vulnerable communities across Afghanistan.

WFP noted that its trucks continue to travel long distances over rough terrain and mountainous areas to deliver life-saving food supplies to remote villages. “For many Afghans facing hunger, this food is their only hope of survival,” the organization stated.

Despite these ongoing efforts, the WFP warned that a severe decline in funding has forced the agency to cut back its services significantly. In recent years, WFP assistance has played a critical role in preventing widespread famine across Afghanistan.

According to several reports, over 23 million people in Afghanistan are currently facing acute food insecurity due to conflict, economic collapse, and climate-related disasters.

The funding shortfall comes amid deepening economic challenges under the Taliban regime. Nearly four years into Taliban rule, Afghan citizens continue to struggle with high unemployment, soaring food prices, and limited access to international aid.

Millions of families remain at risk, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas, where humanitarian support is often the only buffer against starvation. The WFP and other aid agencies have repeatedly called on the global community to renew financial commitments.

Sustained international support is essential to avert a worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan. Without urgent donor funding, the WFP warns that more lives will be put at risk in the coming months.

As the situation grows increasingly dire, humanitarian organizations urge the global community not to turn away from Afghanistan’s most vulnerable—whose survival may depend on just one more truckload of food.
