Illegal miners caused $4.7 mln in damage to Uzbekistan

In Uzbekistan, 26 illegal mining farms have been discovered since the beginning of the year. They have caused damage to the state amounting to over 58 billion Uzbekistani som or $4.7 million. This information comes from reports citing the General Prosecutor's Office of Uzbekistan.

According to the General Prosecutor's Office, during activities monitoring the activities of consumers illegally using electricity, 26 illegal mining farms have been identified since the beginning of the year.

"As a result of the miners' actions, 29 million kWh of electricity were illegally consumed, equivalent to the monthly consumption of 145 thousand households. The damage to the state from the actions of these farms is estimated at 58.2 billion som," the department reported.

Under Uzbekistan's laws, creating illegal mining farms and electricity theft on an especially large scale is punishable as grand theft, carrying a prison sentence ranging from 8 to 15 years.

Substantial fines are also stipulated for illegal mining.
