Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith's first official visit to Kazakhstan could give new impetus to relations between the two countries. During his talks with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana, the two sides discussed the development of political, trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian ties, Tengrinews.kz reported.
Kazakhstan views Laos as an important partner in Southeast Asia and is interested in expanding supplies of metallurgical, food, petrochemical, agricultural, chemical, mechanical engineering, and pharmaceutical products to its market.
Developing transport cooperation is of particular importance. Kazakhstan proposes utilizing its transit capabilities, as well as the Laos-China railway, to expand trade ties between Central and Southeast Asia. This approach meets the interests of both countries: Kazakhstan seeks to strengthen its role as a major transit hub, while Laos gains new opportunities to access international markets.
Overall, relations between Kazakhstan and Laos are still at a nascent stage, but they have promising prospects. A new stage of cooperation could be linked not only to trade, but also to transport, investment, tourism, and humanitarian ties.
The establishment of sister city relations between Astana and Vientiane also creates an additional foundation for strengthening ties between the two countries.
