The official visit of Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to Kyrgyzstan from August 31 to September 2 was an important step in strengthening ties between Central and South Asia. During negotiations with President Sadyr Japarov, the parties signed 16 bilateral documents covering trade, transport, energy, education, healthcare, e-commerce and security.
One of the key results was an agreement on transit trade. It is designed to simplify the transportation of goods, customs procedures and logistics, as well as expand the use of Pakistani seaports for Kyrgyzstan’s access to foreign markets.
Medicines are already among the main goods imported by Kyrgyzstan from Pakistan: their supplies exceeded $3 million in the first half of 2026. Simplification of trade procedures could help expand the range of Pakistani pharmaceutical products on the Kyrgyz market.
At the same time, the current trade turnover remains small - about $16 million per year. Therefore, the goal set by the leaders to bring it to $200 million indicates an intention to transfer political relations to a practical economic plane.
The parties also agreed to develop e-commerce, medical education, science and technology. Overall, Shahbaz Sharif's visit shows that Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan are seeking to use transport connectivity as the basis for broader economic rapprochement between Central and South Asia.
