During the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), Kyrgyzstan’s Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision, Meder Mashiev, held a series of bilateral meetings with representatives of international climate funds, including the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Adaptation Fund, and the Loss and Damage Fund, Akchabar.kg reports.
At the meeting with GEF, the parties discussed preparations for the launch of the new GEF-9 project cycle, scheduled to begin in June 2026. Minister Mashiev emphasized the strategic importance of Kyrgyzstan’s participation in GEF-9 for strengthening environmental resilience, expanding climate finance opportunities, and advancing national priorities. Special attention was given to the interests of mountainous countries and new GEF initiatives, including tackling plastic pollution and developing an international plastic convention.
During talks with the Adaptation Fund, both sides confirmed their interest in implementing climate adaptation projects, focusing on enhancing the resilience of mountain ecosystems and vulnerable communities. Potential directions for future project proposals and ways to strengthen cooperation between the fund and national institutions were also discussed.
Negotiations with the Loss and Damage Fund included exchanges on potential cooperation formats. Kyrgyzstan expressed its readiness to engage actively with the fund in response to increasing climate risks and the need to reinforce mechanisms for addressing climate impacts.
Mashiev highlighted that Kyrgyzstan’s active participation in international climate mechanisms opens new opportunities for implementing national initiatives aimed at environmental protection, developing a green economy, and enhancing the country’s resilience to climate challenges.
