Tajikistan has requested 2.55 million tons of crude oil and petroleum products from Iran to cover the domestic fuel shortage. This was announced by the Tajik Ministry of Transport following talks between the Tajik delegation and Iranian representatives on August 15 in Tehran, Asiaplus.tj reported.
The request includes 2 million tons of crude oil, 150,000 tons of gasoline, 300,000 tons of diesel fuel, and 100,000 tons of aviation fuel. Approximately 51,000 railcars will be required for their delivery.
According to Transport Minister Azim Ibrohim, Tajikistan previously received over 80% of its fuel from Russia, but the geopolitical situation has led to a reduction in supplies. Dushanbe is now considering Iran and other countries as alternative sources.
Tajikistan also proposed creating a "green corridor" for fuel trains, providing special tanker trains, and preferential transit conditions through Iran.
The request demonstrates Dushanbe's desire to diversify its energy logistics and reduce dependence on a single supplier. Iran is of strategic interest in this regard due to its access to port infrastructure, particularly Chabahar.
However, implementing such large-scale supplies will require sustainable rail routes, competitive pricing, and long-term agreements. More broadly, this could strengthen Iran's role as an alternative transit and energy partner for Central Asia.
