Almost a third of Afghanistan's population suffers from malnutrition, and about 6% of children die before the age of five from lack of food and unhealthy living conditions, according to the latest report of the Global Hunger Index (GHI), which is published in Afghan media, RIA Novosti reports.

The report, which covers the hunger situation in 127 countries, notes that Afghanistan has worsened its position in a year, falling two notches, and took 116th place with a score of 30.8. In 2023, it was in 114th place with a score of 30.6.

According to GHI, 30.4% of Afghanistan's population suffers from malnutrition, and 5.8% of children in the country die for this reason before the age of five. The report says that 44.6% of Afghan children under five are shorter than expected for their age, indicating chronic malnutrition. In addition, 3.6% of Afghan children are underweight for their height, which is associated with acute malnutrition.

The hunger situation in Afghanistan, along with 35 other countries with the highest hunger levels, is rated as "serious" by the GHI.

The United Nations previously reported that more than 24 million people in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is an international index that measures hunger and malnutrition in different countries around the world. It is developed jointly by international organizations such as the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Children's Fund (UNICEF).
