Uzbekistan to expand partnership with EU

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting in Cholpon-Ata with President of the European Council Charles Michel, the press service of the President of Uzbekistan reported.

At the meeting, the sides considered issues of further deepening the Uzbek-European multifaceted relations and the development of practical cooperation in a regional format.

Charles Michel congratulated Mirziyoyev on the results of the referendum and expressed his support for the program of democratic reforms and economic reforms.

The sides noted with particular satisfaction the high dynamics of bilateral contacts and exchanges in accordance with the agreements of the high-level meeting held in Tashkent in October 2022. Then it was mainly about ensuring freedom of speech.

The trade turnover of Uzbekistan with the EU countries has grown by 70% since the beginning of 2023. The portfolio of investment projects with the participation of leading European companies in the high-tech sectors of the economy of Uzbekistan exceeded 20 billion euros.

The parties paid special attention to such areas of relations as:

  • increasing the volume and diversification of bilateral trade;
  • extension of the preferential trade regime "GSP +";
  • development of efficient transport routes, primarily the Trans-Caspian transit corridor;
  • implementation of joint programs and projects in the areas of "green" energy, innovation and high technology, digitalization, ecology, education, tourism and other areas.

In addition, the parties stressed the importance of continuing consultations and providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

Earlier it was reported that the European Union will provide free assistance to Uzbekistan in four areas. Named the main condition for cooperation between the parties.

President Mirziyoyev and the Head of the European Council arrived in Kyrgyzstan to participate in the summit "Central Asia - European Union", which opened in Cholpon-Ata.
