Kazakhstan has kept its position as the Central Asian leader in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027, with three universities in the region’s top 100, reported The Astana Times.

This year’s ranking covers 1,722 universities from 26 higher education systems. Farabi University is Kazakhstan’s highest-ranked institution at 46th, followed by Gumilyov Eurasian National University (62nd) and Satbayev University (89th). Nazarbayev University made the biggest jump, rising 62 places from 201st to 139th thanks to strong results in research collaboration and international faculty.

Kazakhstan has 51 universities in the ranking, including seven new entrants, the 10th-largest representation in Asia. The country scored above the Asian average on 7 of 11 indicators, including outbound student exchange, employer reputation and faculty-to-student ratio.

Research impact remains the weak point: on citations per paper, Kazakhstan scored 3.8 against a regional average of 35.2. “The challenge now is to translate rising R&D investment into research impact across the wider system,” said Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President.

More than 30 foreign university branches have opened in Kazakhstan, and government spending on research has more than doubled since 2023.
