Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov is on an official visit to the Republic of Korea from September 15–18. On September 16, he held talks with President Lee Jae-myung in Seoul, after which he participated in the first Central Asia-Republic of Korea summit.
The bilateral talks focused on expanding trade, attracting Korean investment, establishing a joint medical center in Kyrgyzstan, and possible visa facilitation. Japarov also advocated for the creation of a Central Asia-Korea investment fund.
The summit was the first between the leaders of the five Central Asian countries and South Korea. According to Reuters, agreements were reached during the three days of bilateral meetings. Following the talks between Kyrgyzstan and South Korea on September 16, the parties signed 18 cooperation documents.
Overall, over three days of meetings between South Korea and five Central Asian countries, more than 70 agreements and memorandums were signed in energy, infrastructure, technology, investment, and raw materials extraction.
For Kyrgyzstan, the importance of the visit lies primarily in the attempt to translate political dialogue with Seoul into concrete economic projects.
Bishkek's goals are to attract Korean capital and technology, expand Kyrgyz exports, develop medicine and human capital, and gain access to new regional investment mechanisms.
The timing of the visit is particularly significant: South Korea is currently strengthening its economic presence in Central Asia, focusing on energy, critical minerals, infrastructure, digital technologies, and production chains.
For Kyrgyzstan, this creates an opportunity to present the country not only as a market but also as a platform for investment and regional projects. The actual outcome of the visit will depend on the implementation of the signed agreements, not just the number of documents.
