Tajikistan’s Minister of Transport, Azim Ibrohim, held a meeting with a World Bank (WB) mission led by the Head of the WB Office in Tajikistan, Vee Winnie Wang, reports Avesta.tj.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the implementation of key projects in the country’s transport sector, as well as cooperation in the area of disaster resilience.
The World Bank mission visited Tajikistan within the framework of the state investment project “Enhancing Disaster Preparedness and Resilience in Tajikistan,” funded by the World Bank. As part of this project, in January 2024, an agreement was signed with the South Korean company ISAN Corporation to prepare a feasibility study and detailed plans for the construction of two bridges in the Rudaki district and two more in the Vose district.
Tender documentation and environmental measures will also be developed for the implementation of these facilities. Azim Ibrohim thanked the World Bank for its support in implementing the Central Asia Regional Links Program (CARs).
As part of the program, a contract was signed with the British consulting company EASST Expertize LTD to support efforts in increasing seat belt usage, which is an important aspect of improving road safety in the country.
The minister also highlighted the successful implementation of several investment projects, including the rehabilitation of the “Khujand–Isfara” highway and the construction of bridges in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), where innovative engineering solutions such as gabion mesh and high-quality materials were used.
“Tajikistan is actively working on the development of transport infrastructure to transform the country into a key regional transit hub,” Azim Ibrohim emphasized. He noted that the adoption of modern technologies and sustainable transport solutions play a crucial role in this process.
At the end of the discussions, both parties agreed to continue close cooperation and exchange experience to further advance joint initiatives and projects. Participants in the discussion also included members of the World Bank mission, including the Project Team Lead Ahsan Tehsin, disaster risk management specialist Faridun Sanginov, transport engineer Marinos Skempas, and staff of the Project Implementation Unit of the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan.
