The group was established on June 15, 1964, during the first UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. Initially, it included 77 countries, which gave the group its name.

Current membership: As of 2025, the Group of 77 comprises 134 countries, representing the overwhelming majority of UN member states. Despite its expansion, the group has retained its historical name. China is not a member of the group but actively participates in its work.
