Tajikistan's external debt amounts to $3.2 bln

The total public debt of Tajikistan as of the beginning of July 2024 amounted to $3.6 billion, which is equivalent to 27.5% of the GDP. This was reported by Deputy Minister of Finance Yusuf Majidi, Asiaplus.tj reports.

Of this amount, $3.2 billion (88%) is external debt, and about $400 million (12%) is domestic debt. The total external debt corresponds to 23.7% of the GDP.

In the first half of 2024, $135 million was allocated for servicing the country's external debt, of which $92.2 million was the principal debt and $42.8 million was interest.

The fulfillment of the state's financial obligations is carried out according to the approved plan, and there are no outstanding debts to international financial organizations or individual states.

According to Yusuf Majidi, Tajikistan spends no more than 10% of its budget annually on servicing external debt.

The largest creditors of Tajikistan are China ($900 million), as well as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The Republic also has a debt on Eurobonds ($500 million), which were issued in 2017 to complete the Rogun Hydropower Plant. These are being repaid according to the approved schedule.
