Tajikistan’s Salaries Remain the Lowest in Central Asia Despite Economic Growth

The average salary in Tajikistan in April 2026 was 3,262.7 somoni ($353), a 20.3% increase compared to April of the previous year. These data were presented in a report by the Tajikistan Statistics Agency.

Despite improvements to the national statistical system and the regular publication of macroeconomic indicators, wages in Tajikistan remain the lowest among Central Asian countries.

However, in regional comparisons, the gap remains significant. In Kazakhstan, the average salary is approximately 423,000 tenge (almost $790), more than twice the Tajik average. In Kyrgyzstan, the average salary reached approximately 42,000 som ($481), and in Uzbekistan, approximately 6 million som ($484).

This difference is explained by the economic structure, lower labor productivity, and limited capacity of Tajikistan's industrial sector. Under these conditions, a significant portion of the population continues to rely on remittances from migrant workers, which remain a significant source of household income.

The country's transition to international statistical standards and more timely publication of GDP data are increasing economic transparency and investor confidence. However, the main criterion for assessing the effectiveness of economic policy for the population remains sustainable growth in real incomes. As long as wage levels lag significantly behind those of neighboring countries, improving the quality of statistical reporting alone will not improve the well-being of citizens.
