Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov held talks with the Regional Coordinator of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for Central Asia, Zeynal Hajiyev, in Ashgabat, Hronika.tm reports.

The parties discussed the implementation of international migration management standards into Turkmen legislation and the effective application of migration laws in practice.

They also discussed improving contractual and legal partnerships.

On September 5, several international NGOs sent an open letter to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan regarding the systematic violations of Turkmen citizens' right to freedom of movement.

It is worth noting that not only civil activists but also students are being prevented from leaving the country. On August 12, border guards at Ashgabat airport did not allow 20 students to board a plane, and on August 28, 60 students were stopped from departing to various educational institutions in Turkey.
