The UN Secretary-General António Guterres is on an official visit to Turkmenistan. During a meeting with the President of the country, Serdar Berdimuhamedow, he highly praised the policy of neutrality pursued by Ashgabat.
"Turkmenistan plays a very important role in international relations, particularly in interaction with the United Nations. In these turbulent times, I highly appreciate Turkmenistan's policy of neutrality," said A. Guterres.
Central Asia continues to face many obstacles to development – water shortages, land degradation, natural disasters, and connectivity limitations, according to Guterres. "The solutions to these problems are interconnected and can be found through dialogue and cooperation, and Turkmenistan plays an important role in this process," noted the UN Secretary-General.
A. Guterres expressed gratitude to Turkmenistan for hosting the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Ashgabat. "With the participation of all five Central Asian countries, the Regional Centre will continue to serve as a forum for uniting efforts and developing common solutions, particularly regarding the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia and the management of natural resources for the benefit of the entire population," he said.
