Special Representative of the President of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan, Ismatulla Irgashev, and the European Union's Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Thomas Niklasson, held discussions via video conference on matters of bilateral cooperation, the Uzbekistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

"Both sides expressed mutual interest in continuing consultations on Afghan issues, both bilaterally and at the level of special representatives from Central Asian countries," the statement read.

The parties discussed Uzbekistan and the EU's efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the Afghan crisis and the swift provision of humanitarian and other assistance to the country.

The leading role of the United Nations in Afghan resolution and the coordination of international efforts were emphasized in the Ministry's statement.

During the SCO summit in July, Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev mentioned that the problems of Afghanistan and the tragedy of the Afghan people have taken a backseat on the international agenda.
