Results of Summit in Astana: SCO will contribute to strengthening UN

"Tajikistan, although a small country, nevertheless has a significant influence and plays an outstanding role in the work of the United Nations and the world community as a whole," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres during a meeting with the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, Asiaplus.tj reports.

The UN Secretary-General arrived in Dushanbe on the evening of July 4 for a two-day visit as part of his tour of Central Asian countries.

During the meeting with President Rahmon, the parties discussed achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, implementing the "Dushanbe Water Declaration," and fulfilling Tajikistan's National Development Strategy until 2030, aimed at addressing water, climate, and glacier preservation issues, according to the press service of the President of Tajikistan.

In this regard, the need for reforming the international financial system to ensure sustainable financing and address climate change issues was recognized. Tajikistan expressed support for the UN's efforts in sustainable development, strengthening peace and security, and developing science and technology, including digitalization.

Tajikistan fully supports the efforts of the world community to find ways to reduce the negative consequences of climate change, reports the press service of the President of Tajikistan.

Regarding security issues, the parties called for joint responses to the growing threats of terrorism, extremism, and transnational organized crime, including drug trafficking and other global dangers.

On the same day, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the Tajik capital for a two-day official visit. He will hold talks with the top leadership of Tajikistan.

UN Secretary-General Guterres and Chinese President Xi Jinping participated in the 24th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State in Astana, which took place on July 3-4, 2024.
