Kazakhstan hosted an international summit of the Aqaba Process in Astana on November 6, devoted to security challenges linked to artificial intelligence, reported The Astana Times.

The meeting brought together President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Azerbaijan’s parliamentary speaker Sahiba Gafarova and Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev also attended. Leaders discussed regional security, counterterrorism, extremism, threats posed by digital technologies and the prevention of radicalisation among young people.

King Abdullah launched the Aqaba Process in 2015 as an international platform for heads of state, security chiefs and international organisations to coordinate against terrorism and violent extremism. The Astana round is the first to focus on AI. The theme reflects growing concern that generative tools, deepfakes and automated propaganda could be used for recruitment, financing and attacks.

The summit followed Tokayev’s talks with the Jordanian king on November 5. The two leaders exchanged state orders and agreed to expand cooperation on security and counterterrorism. By bringing four Central Asian presidents to one table with a Middle Eastern monarch, Astana is positioning itself as a convenor on emerging security agendas beyond the region.
