Experts raising issue of Kazakhstan joining BRICS

The authorities in Kazakhstan are extremely cautious about whether they need new commitments, notes the analytical center "Central Asia: Cronos."

In August 2023, South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, announced that 23 countries, including Kazakhstan, had formally applied to join BRICS, Eurasia Today reports.

Astana indicated that they plan to participate in BRICS, but in the same year, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it was premature to talk about Kazakhstan joining BRICS.

"Chinese experts note that such an easy entry into BRICS will not always be possible. If Kazakhstan doesn't act quickly, tomorrow it may have to overcome barriers in the form of meeting BRICS economic standards to join a club that includes giants like China and India. Thus, the question is: BRICS or not BRICS?" warns Adil Kaukenov, director of the Kazakhstan Center for Chinese Studies "China Center."

Meanwhile, Kaukenov recently pointed out a systemic problem with ineffective communication between Kazakhstan's expert community and government officials.

According to him, officials do not want to act on their own and wait for experts to give them quick "magic" recommendations to solve problems so they can report successes "upwards." Experts, on the other hand, do not want to "do someone else's job" but are interested in receiving funding and praise.
