Total assets of the Kyrgyz banking sector increased by 30.2% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, reaching 1 trillion 577.3 billion soms (approximately $18 billion) as of June 30, according to data from the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic.
At the end of June, the country's banking system included 26 commercial banks and 306 branches. Six financial institutions provided Islamic finance services.
One of the key drivers of the banking sector's growth was the expansion of lending. The loan portfolio of commercial banks increased by 18.9% from January to June, reaching 602.6 billion soms ($6.9 billion).
Meanwhile, the deposit base grew at a more moderate pace. Total deposits increased by 6.8%, reaching 924.7 billion soms ($10.65 billion).
The Islamic finance segment demonstrated the highest growth rates. The volume of funds issued in the first half of the year increased by 35.4%, reaching 26 billion soms.
This significant growth in assets demonstrates the continued expansion of Kyrgyzstan's financial sector and the increasing role of banks in economic activity. Moreover, the dynamics of the growth pattern show that banks are expanding their operations significantly faster than their deposit base: assets increased by 30.2%, the loan portfolio by 18.9%, while deposits grew by only 6.8%.
This means that the expansion of bank assets is driven not only by new deposits but also by other funding sources, capital growth, and increased financial operations. At the same time, accelerated lending can become an important driver of economic growth, supporting investment, consumer demand, and business development.
Islamic finance deserves special attention. Its growth of 35.4% significantly outpaces the overall credit market, indicating growing demand for alternative financial instruments. However, in absolute terms, this segment remains relatively small—approximately 26 billion soms compared to 602.6 billion soms in the total commercial bank loan portfolio.
Overall, the current dynamics indicate that Kyrgyzstan's banking system is entering a period of active expansion. The main challenge if this pace is maintained will be ensuring the quality of the loan portfolio, sufficient liquidity, and a sustainable resource base. If asset growth is accompanied by a corresponding increase in capital and effective risk management, the expansion of the banking sector could become a key factor in the country's further economic development.
