The work on defining the Kyrgyz-Tajik border is nearing completion. This was announced by the Head of Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee for National Security (SCNS), Kamchybek Tashiev, during a speech in Batken at the international scientific conference "The History of Batken – A Spiritual Heritage of the Nation," Asiaplus.tj reports.
He said that he "wanted to share joyful news."
"In the near future, God willing, we will finally resolve the border issue with our neighbors. There will no longer be any uncertainty about whose land this is and what it represents. Everything will be resolved within a legal framework, which will allow us to guard our land as the apple of our eye. This is also our achievement," he stated.
Earlier, from October 7 to 13, another meeting was held in Batken between the topographic working groups and legal working groups of the government delegations of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan regarding the delimitation and demarcation of the shared state border. According to the SCNS of Tajikistan, both sides continued discussions on the remaining sections of the border. This work will continue at the next meeting, which will take place in Tajikistan.
Another veeting on the Tajik-Kyrgyz dorder held in Buston.
On October 1, a meeting was held in the city of Buston, Sughd Region, Tajikistan, between the co-chairs of the government delegations of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Kamchybek Tashiev and Saymumin Yatimov, to discuss the delimitation and demarcation of the border. The heads of the delegations gave "specific instructions to the working groups" for further determination of the border route between the two countries.
The border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan stretches 987 kilometers. In late July, the head of the Sughd Region, Rajabboy Ahmadzoda, reported that 94% of the Kyrgyz-Tajik border had already been described. He did not specify the locations of the remaining 6% disputed areas. Taking into account the progress made by the working groups, about 59-60 kilometers of the border still need to be defined.
At the end of last year, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov expressed hope that the delimitation process would be completed by spring 2024. During his visit to Bishkek and Dushanbe in January, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that the signing of the delimitation and demarcation agreement between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan was expected in March. However, the border determination process between the two countries is still not complete.
