Kyrgyzstan expects UN special mission to discuss exchange of external debt for "green" initiatives

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Jeenbek Kulubaev met in Geneva with Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebeca Greenspan, the press service of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry reported.

Kulubaev arrived in Switzerland to attend the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council.

At the meeting, the parties discussed a number of topical issues, including those related to the development of a creative economy, the exchange of external debt for "green" initiatives, as well as sustainable mountain development.

In particular, Kulubaev announced the adoption of the Concept for the Development of the Creative Economy of Kyrgyzstan in 2022 and informed about the development of this industry in the country. He also recalled the resolution of the UN General Assembly adopted in December 2022 on the announcement of 2023-2027. "Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions".

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan informed about the proposal of President Sadyr Japarov to exchange the external debt of Kyrgyzstan for "green" initiatives. Taking into account the mandate of UNCTAD, Kulubaev asked Greenspan, within the framework of the mandate of the Organization, to provide support in the practical implementation of this idea.

To determine specific measures to deepen further cooperation with UNCTAD, Kulubaev invited Rebeka Greenspan to make a working visit to Kyrgyzstan.

The Secretary-General of UNCTAD noted the relevance of the voiced initiatives. She expressed her readiness to support Kyrgyzstan in their implementation within the framework of the mandate of the Organization, while recommending the development of an integrated approach in this direction. In this regard, she expressed her intention to send a special mission to Bishkek to discuss cooperation with the government of Kyrgyzstan on these issues.
