Malaysia intends to take its energy partnership with Turkmenistan to a new level by expanding opportunities for service, engineering, and technology companies. This was announced by Malaysia's Deputy Minister of Economy, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, at the "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2026" (OGT 2026) international conference and exhibition in Ashgabat, Orient.tm reported.
According to the event's organizers and participants, 20 Malaysian companies are participating in the exhibition. For the first time, a Malaysian national pavilion has opened in Ashgabat, where seven leading oil and gas service companies are presenting their developments with the support of the Malaysian Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) and Petronas.
An important step was the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the state-owned concern Turkmennebit and MPRC. The document aims to facilitate the introduction of Malaysian technologies and equipment into Turkmenistan's oil production sector. The cooperation builds on Petronas's long-standing presence on the Turkmen shelf of the Caspian Sea.
The Malaysian delegation also held talks with representatives of the Turkmen government, the management of the state-owned concerns Turkmengaz and Turkmennebit, and the international companies Dragon Oil and Eni Turkmenistan. A special roundtable on energy cooperation is scheduled for October 23.
Deepening cooperation opens opportunities for Turkmenistan to modernize its oil and gas industry, implement modern technologies, and enhance the skills of local specialists. For Malaysia, this is an opportunity to expand its presence in the Central Asian energy market. However, the actual scale of the partnership will depend on how quickly the memorandums translate into investments, contracts, and joint projects with localized production.
