Kyrgyz wrestler Meerim Zhumanazarova has risen to first place in the United World Wrestling (UWW) world rankings, reported 24.kg, citing the organisation’s official website.
The update follows the World Wrestling Championships held in Astana from October 24 to November 2. Zhumanazarova won silver in the women’s 68 kg category, earning 64,800 ranking points, enough to put her at the top of the world list.
Other Kyrgyz wrestlers also improved their standings. Ernazar Akmataliev kept second place in his category with 54,500 points. Akzhol Makhmudov, who took bronze in Astana, climbed 42 places to sixth with 36,800 points.
The rankings come as some consolation after the team finished the championships without a gold medal. Still, the results confirm Kyrgyzstan’s place among the leading wrestling nations of Asia. Wrestling is one of the country’s most successful Olympic sports, and Zhumanazarova won Olympic bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Ranking points also matter for seeding at major tournaments, giving Kyrgyz athletes a stronger position ahead of next season.
