In Afghanistan, a number of opposition figures have agreed to recognize Atta Mohammad Nur, a political supporter of Abdullah Abdullah and the leader of the Islamic Society of Afghanistan party, as their leader, Eurasia Today reports.

At the moment, he leads his faction within the party instead of Salahuddin Rabbani, according to "Sputnik Afghanistan," citing journalist Bashir Ahmad Kasani.

The following individuals have reportedly supported the idea:

  • Ahmad Massoud, leader of the FNCA (Front for National Salvation of Afghanistan)
  • Mohammad Ismail Khan, former governor of Herat
  • Mohammad Yunus Kanuni, former vice president of the country
  • Hazrat Ali, former deputy from Nangarhar
  • Mohammad Almas Zahid, former parliament deputy from Parwan

The report states that Ahmad Massoud additionally promised to share part of his financial resources with Nur. A meeting of leaders is expected to take place for the consolidation of the leadership of the Islamic Society of Afghanistan.

In 2022, videos from over 40 small groups in different regions of Afghanistan surfaced, pledging allegiance to Atta Nur and vowing to confront the Taliban with arms, but this has not happened yet.

Background: Atta Mohammad Nur holds significant influence among the Tajik diaspora in Afghanistan and continues to actively participate in the economic and political life of northern Afghanistan. He is known for overseeing the complete destruction of opium poppy fields in the Balkh province, where he served as governor until 2018.

He was a staunch opponent of the Taliban in Afghanistan but eventually changed his stance, emphasizing that if the Taliban want to become a legitimate force in Afghanistan, they need to cease terrorist activities.
