President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev supported the decision of a special commission to deny a pardon to the former head of the National Security Committee (KNB) of Kazakhstan, Karim Massimov, who was convicted of attempting to seize power, reports "Sputnik Kazakhstan."

The situation regarding Massimov's request for a pardon was commented on by the chairman of the special commission, Marat Bashimov.

"The commission cannot pardon; the commission can only recommend to the head of state, and the head of state agreed with this," said Bashimov.

He clarified that the right to pardon citizens lies solely with the President of Kazakhstan.

It is known that in January 2022, an attempted coup d'état was made in Kazakhstan. Massimov was recognized as the organizer, and the court sentenced him to 18 years in prison for treason and attempting a violent seizure of power.

On June 10, 2024, Massimov submitted a request for a pardon to the President of Kazakhstan. The special commission on pardoning issues recommended Tokayev deny Massimov's pardon request.
