Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov approved initiatives to strengthen international cooperation on climate change, presented by Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, Orient.tm reported.
The central element of the new strategy will be the creation of the Ashgabat Climate Dialogue—a permanent international platform for discussing climate change issues. It also envisages the creation of an interdepartmental commission, the development of regional climate centers jointly with the UN, and expanded cooperation with international financial institutions, including the Green Climate Fund, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank.
Turkmenistan consistently utilizes the climate agenda as a key focus of its foreign policy. The country seeks to position itself not only as a major exporter of natural gas but also as a regional hub for environmental cooperation, promoting initiatives under the auspices of the UN.
The climate platforms proposed by Ashgabat will strengthen the country's international standing, expand cooperation with global financial institutions, and attract investment in projects to adapt to climate change, combat desertification, and implement green technologies.
This policy is consistent with Turkmenistan's multi-vector foreign policy, based on its status of permanent neutrality. However, the effectiveness of these new initiatives will depend on their practical implementation, the transparency of projects, and the country's willingness to expand international cooperation on environmental and sustainable development issues.
