At the invitation of UN-Water, an Uzbekistan delegation will participate in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, which will be held in New York from July 5 to 11, Daryo.uz reports.

At the international forum, the country's achievements in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 6, dedicated to ensuring access to water and sustainable water management, will be presented. Particular attention will be paid to reducing water stress.

According to the Center for Sustainable Development in Water, UN-Water has recognized Uzbekistan as one of the countries that has made significant progress in reducing water stress. The water stress indicator has decreased from 169% in 2017 to 122% in 2022, and is expected to further decrease to 117% by the end of this year.

At the forum, the Uzbek side will also present the results of the implementation of water-saving technologies, digitalization of the industry, and reform of the water resources management system.

The results achieved demonstrate a gradual improvement in the effectiveness of public policy in the water sector and distinguish Uzbekistan from most Central Asian countries, where water scarcity remains a pressing issue.

Neighboring Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, for example, continue to face high water stress due to significant agricultural and industrial needs, while Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, which possess the region's primary water resources, face the need to modernize their hydraulic infrastructure and improve water management efficiency.

Against this backdrop, the reduction in water stress in Uzbekistan demonstrates the effectiveness of the reforms being implemented and strengthens the country's position as a regional leader in sustainable water resource management. Participation in the UN forum will not only allow for the presentation of the achieved results but also for the expansion of international cooperation in water security and the exchange of modern technologies.
