On August 30, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov received Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who was visiting Ashgabat. The two sides confirmed their interest in further strengthening political and economic cooperation, Hronikatm.com reported.
Trade and economic partnership was a key focus of the talks. Berdimuhamedov noted the country's significant experience in working with Japanese companies in the gas and chemical industries and emphasized opportunities for expanding their participation in new projects.
During the talks between Foreign Ministers Rashid Meredov and Toshimitsu Motegi, cooperation in the gas chemical industry, electric power, and transport were also discussed, as well as prospects for collaboration in advanced technologies and artificial intelligence. The Japanese side expressed interest in projects aimed at diversifying the Turkmen economy.
Relations between Ashgabat and Tokyo have a solid foundation: Japan has been involved in major industrial and infrastructure projects in Turkmenistan for many years, which has fostered a high level of mutual trust. A new emphasis on digital technologies could give this partnership a modern dimension.
Following the talks, a Cooperation Program between the foreign ministries of the two countries for 2027–2029 was signed. A meeting of the economic committees of Turkmenistan and Japan is also planned for Tokyo this year.
