EU Applied a Sanctions Mechanism Against Kyrgyzstan for First Time

Kyrgyzstan has become the first country against which the European Union has applied its anti-sanctions evasion mechanism, according to Reuters and other international media outlets, as reported by Economist.kg.

The decision was made as part of the 20th sanctions package, approved on April 22. Brussels imposed a direct ban on the export of a number of dual-use goods to the country, including computer-controlled metal-cutting machines and communications equipment such as modems, routers, and radios.

Furthermore, the restrictions affected several Kyrgyz logistics companies, which are now denied access to EU transport infrastructure.

The mechanism was activated following a sharp increase in trade figures. According to the European Commission, electronics exports from the EU to Kyrgyzstan increased by 800% in 2025, while shipments from the country to Russia increased by 1,200%. Brussels believes that the country's authorities have not taken sufficient measures to control these flows, despite visits by the EU's special envoy on sanctions, David O'Sullivan.

Experts note that the measures introduced place trade between the EU and Kyrgyzstan under heightened scrutiny. European companies are now required to prove that the products they supply will not be re-exported to Russia.

The new restrictions are expected to reduce the supply of European industrial equipment to Kyrgyzstan's domestic market.
