The Afghan Ministry of Urban Development and Housing has announced that work is currently underway on the second section of the first phase of the New Kabul project in Deh Sabz, with 25% completed so far, Orient.tm reports

Kamal Afghan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, told TOLOnews that the estimated cost of building the first phase of this project is $6.5 billion.

According to Kamal Afghan, investors from Turkey, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Iran have shown interest in building this major project.

The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing described the New Kabul project as one of the largest in the country and said its implementation is a priority for the Islamic Emirate.

According to the project, New Kabul, which covers an area of 740 square kilometers north of Kabul, will be one and a half times the size of the current capital of Afghanistan.

Kabul New City is a mega urban development project initiated by the Afghan government in 2006 and approved by the country’s cabinet in 2009.

The project, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is conceived as an integrated urban development, a response to the problems of Kabul, the current capital.

The city is strategically planned to be developed in two main phases over a period of 30 years. However, due to numerous problems, including insecurity, the project has been behind schedule. In August 2023, construction of Section B, the first phase of Kabul New City, was opened.

Kabul New City is planned to offer the full range of amenities of a modern metropolis and accommodate 3 million residents, which will be a solution to the needs of the overcrowded Afghan capital.
