ASTANA - Amid preparations for Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming visit to Kazakhstan, transport and logistics cooperation between the two countries is further strengthening. By the end of 2025, rail traffic between Kazakhstan and Russia reached 92.1 million tons, an increase of 3.5% compared to 2024, Kazinform reports.

Transit traffic was a key driver of growth. Russian cargo exports through Kazakhstan increased by 16.1%, reaching 17.3 million tons. Meanwhile, Kazakhstani goods transited through Russia increased by 20.4%, reaching 21.5 million tons.

The intergovernmental agreement on transit rail traffic, signed in November 2025 in Moscow, had a significant impact on freight traffic dynamics. The document is already demonstrating practical results and forms the legal basis for further expansion of logistics cooperation between the two countries.

The positive trend continues in 2026. In the first four months, Kazakhstani cargo exports—including coal, ferrous metals, and fertilizers—transiting through Russia increased, reaching 7 million tons. The volume of Russian cargo transiting Kazakhstan exceeded 12 million tons, demonstrating further growth.

Against this backdrop, transport and logistics integration is becoming a key element of the economic agenda for the upcoming talks in Astana, where discussions are expected to focus on expanding transit routes, modernizing infrastructure, and increasing the capacity of railway corridors between the two countries.
