Singapore's Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong is paying an official visit to Kazakhstan from August 24 to 27. This is his first visit to Central Asia. On August 26, he held talks with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov. During the visit, Lee Hsien Loong was also awarded the Order of Dostyk, First Class.
Following the talks, Kazakhstan and Singapore signed two agreements. Singapore Cooperation Enterprise and the Ministry of Water Resources of Kazakhstan agreed to cooperate in the areas of sustainable water resource management, water treatment, and digitalization.
The second memorandum focuses on the digital integration of the Middle Corridor, including the development of digital trade, logistics, and supply chain management.
Furthermore, Singapore and KazAID intend to conduct a joint training program in Astana for up to 30 civil servants from Central Asian countries on artificial intelligence, digital development, and STEM.
The agreements demonstrate that Kazakhstan and Singapore are expanding cooperation in areas related to technological modernization and improving infrastructure efficiency. For Astana, digitalization of the Middle Corridor is of particular importance, as it could help expedite transit procedures and enhance the competitiveness of the route between China and Europe.
Water resources management is a separate promising area. Singapore, with its considerable experience in dealing with limited freshwater resources, can provide Kazakhstan with modern technological and management solutions.
More broadly, the visit strengthens Central Asia's ties with Southeast Asia. Singapore, which will chair ASEAN in 2027, has the opportunity to expand its engagement with the region, while Kazakhstan gains an additional channel for developing economic and technological ties with Southeast Asian countries.
