Border crossings between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan will resume operations on March 13. The official opening ceremony will be attended by high-ranking representatives of both states, a source in the administration of Tajikistan’s Sughd region told Asiaplus.tj.

The source did not specify whether Presidents Emomali Rahmon and Sadyr Japarov would be present at the event.

Meanwhile, on March 12, the President of Tajikistan arrived in Kyrgyzstan for a two-day state visit. During the negotiations, both sides will discuss key issues of bilateral cooperation, including security, economic relations, and border delimitation. Following the meeting, the leaders are expected to sign a package of bilateral agreements, including a border treaty between the two countries.

The state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan had remained closed since May 2021 following an armed clash that resulted in dozens of casualties on both sides.

In the following years, efforts were made to resolve the border issue. From 2022 to 2024, dozens of negotiations on border delimitation and demarcation took place. In December 2024, the heads of the State National Security Committees of both countries, Kamchybek Tashiev and Saimumin Yatimov, officially announced the completion of the description of the remaining border sections.

On February 21, 2025, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan initialed draft documents for the finalization of the border demarcation.
