Early this year Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have agreed that 3.7 billion cubic meters of water will be sent to Kazakhstan via the Syr Darya River over six months. However, the Uzbek side has exceeded this plan and sent the specified amount of water in four months, reports Ritmeurasia.ru.

All this work is being done to meet the needs of farmers in the southern regions of Kazakhstan.

"Thanks to the negotiations conducted by our side and the preliminary agreement with our neighbors on the operation schedules of the Toktogul and Bahri Tojik reservoirs, water is steadily arriving in the Kazakh part of the interstate Dostyk canal," said Moldir Abdualieva, an official representative of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan. "Currently, 90 cubic meters of water per second are flowing into our country through the canal. This is sufficient to provide farmers in the Turkestan region with irrigation water."

It is expected that Uzbekistan will send about another 1 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan by the end of the irrigation season.
