The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan has imposed a temporary six-month ban on the import of certain types of building materials from countries outside the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The corresponding decree was signed by Cabinet Chairman Adylbek Kasymaliev and will take effect seven days after its official publication, Akchabar.kg reported.
The restrictions do not apply to transit, supplies from EAEU member states, or the import of materials for strategic and investment projects. A detailed list of restricted goods is contained in an appendix to the decree, which is currently being prepared for publication.
The introduction of this measure could significantly impact supplies from China, a key exporter of building materials to the country, which accounted for 90.9% of prefabricated building material imports (1.53 billion soms), approximately 85% of refractory materials, and half of processed stone imports in the first half of this year. Other major suppliers on the market include Uzbekistan, Turkey, Iran, and Spain.
The temporary restriction aims to protect domestic producers and redirect procurement to domestic manufacturers and EAEU partners. In the short term, the restructuring of supply chains could lead to a localized increase in prices for finishing materials and a temporary shortage of certain items for the private sector.
However, maintaining exceptions for major public investment projects will help avoid the freezing of key infrastructure construction projects in the country.
