In October 2026, the daily flow of trucks through the Torugart checkpoint on the Kyrgyz-Chinese border reached 538 vehicles, an increase of almost 50% compared to the first half of the year, when the figure was 359 vehicles per day, Economist.kg reported, citing the Customs Service.
This significant increase was the result of a comprehensive modernization of border infrastructure, including the commissioning of six new traffic lanes in July 2026 and the optimization of the control procedure sequence, which reduced the average inspection time to 10 minutes.
A key element of the upgraded checkpoint is the "Intelligent Checkpoint" system, which automates vehicle movement and prevents congestion. Thanks to this, cargo volume increased by 28% in the first nine months of 2026, exceeding 2.1 million tons with 217,000 border crossings.
The modernization of the border crossing directly corresponds to the current dynamics and scale of trade and economic cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and China.
Today, China confidently maintains its status as Bishkek's key trading partner, accounting for over 40% of Kyrgyzstan's total foreign trade turnover, which consistently exceeds $5 billion annually.
The structure of trade turnover is characterized by a predominance of Chinese imports of machinery, equipment, and consumer goods, a significant portion of which are re-exported to EAEU countries, making the expansion of Torugart a strategic step in strengthening the republic's transit potential.
