An official delegation from the World Bank, led by Managing Director of Operations Anna Bjerde and Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Antonella Bassani, expressed readiness to continue supporting the completion of the Rogun Hydropower Plant in Tajikistan. The delegation visited Tajikistan and reviewed the construction progress of the Rogun HPP, reports Asiaplus.tj.
The guests were accompanied by Tajikistan's Prime Minister, Kohir Rasulzoda. The delegation inspected key parts of the station, including underground sections, transport tunnels, the turbine system, and the installed equipment. Bank representatives gave a positive assessment of the construction pace and the quality of the work.
The World Bank is one of Tajikistan's key development partners and has supported the Rogun HPP since the project's active phase began.
In 2023, the Bank allocated $15 million in non-repayable aid to improve the effectiveness of the project’s implementation.
In 2024, $350 million was approved as a grant under the first phase of a broader assistance program, with a total volume of $650 million.
According to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Energy, $6.2 billion will be required to complete the plant by 2033, with about $1 billion needed annually.
The full commissioning of all the plant’s units, including the sixth and final turbine, is planned for 2029.
The World Bank delegation also met with the President of Tajikistan, during which Emomali Rahmon highly praised the level of cooperation with the Bank, calling it a reliable partner in sustainable development.
The meeting focused especially on scaling up clean energy production and exports, as well as attracting grants and concessional funding to implement priority national projects.
Over 30 years of partnership, the World Bank has provided extensive support to Tajikistan in implementing reforms and modernizing key sectors. As of early 2024, the World Bank was financing 27 projects in the country totaling $1.67 billion. These projects cover energy, transportation, water supply and sanitation infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and other areas.
