The Lower House of the Parliament of Tajikistan has ratified a credit agreement between the government of the country and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for the construction project of the Obigarm - Nurabad highway, Asia Plus.tj reports.
Tajikistan's Minister of Finance, Fayziddin Kahhorzoda, presenting the agreement to the deputies, noted that according to the document signed on April 3 of this year, the total amount of the loan is $75.5 million.
Kahhorzoda emphasized that the loan is provided for a period of 29 years with a six-year grace period.
According to him, the credit will be directed towards the construction of the 73-kilometer Obigarm - Nurabad road, including a bridge on this road with a length of 920 meters.
The head of the Committee on Economy and Finance of the lower house of parliament, Aziz Ghiyoszoda, noted that to lead Tajikistan out of the communication deadlock and transform it into a transit country, currently, 17 investment projects in the transport sector are being implemented, with a total budget of over 13 billion somoni (about $1.2 billion).
He emphasized that construction and modernization of the Rogun - Obigarm - Nurabad highway with a budget of 3.3 billion somoni (over $300 million) are currently underway.
The deputy added that the ratification of the proposed credit agreement will allow the construction of the largest bridge in the republic.
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank was established at the suggestion of China in 2014. The main goal of this financial organization is to stimulate financial cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and finance infrastructure projects in Asia.
Currently, it has 57 member countries, including Tajikistan. The AIIB headquarters is located in Beijing.
